We’ve all kind of grown up with Rihanna, haven’t we? Not many popstars have stayed as relevant as Rihanna has over the past eight years, and we’ve watched her grow from a starry-eyed, fresh-faced rising starlet to a confident diva in her own right.
“Pon De Replay” was easily one of the biggest hit songs to have come out of 2005, and however much our music preferences have changed since our young MTV-watching days, we can’t deny that it’s incredibly impressive how Rihanna has managed to stay at the top of her game in an industry bustling with new faces and talent every day.
We’ve seen her through her “SOS” days, when she affirmed her superstar status with mega-hit “Umbrella”, and when she subsequently took the clubs by storm with tracks like “Disturbia”, “What’s My Name”, “We Found Love”, and the recent “Diamonds”. There hasn’t been a year when Rihanna isn’t on the charts at some point ever since she emerged into the scene – a feat even the Princess of Pop (Britney Spears) herself did not manage to pull off for as long a time in her prime.
2013 now sees her as the proud owner of six Grammy Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards, and she is currently the top-selling digital artist of all time. She has sold over 41 million albums and 150 million digital tracks worldwide since her debut album, Music of the Sun, came out in 2005.
Her seventh and latest album, Unapologetic, is further proof of her substance and worth in the music industry. The album is Rihanna’s first number one album on the charts, and has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide since its release in November last year. The album, which incorporates pop, EDM, and dubstep elements into its tracks, further highlights the singer’s versatility and ability to adapt to different musical conditions as each year passes on.
She is also embarking on her fourth world tour, and Singapore is one of the stops come Sunday, 22 September 2013. She will headline the Padang Stage at the 2013 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix – looks like all your calls of “Where have you been all my life” have been answered!
